Digital for Care update: HSE Virtual Ward Programme
Virtual wards are just one of Digital for Care’s success stories. Virtual wards are now operational in each region; they are scaling in size and expanding clinical pathways to provide for maximum bed capacity. In this webinar, we will hear patient and staff experiences of virtual wards, how they are transforming healthcare delivery, and the clear positive impact they are having on patients, staff, and systemic pressures.

Dr Carlos Mejia-Chew, an Infectious Disease Specialist at the St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH), where he leads the hospital’s Virtual Ward and OPAT program
Jesna José Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) 111 Virtual Ward University Hospital Limerick (UHL)
There will also be a video recording from Martin Cassidy, a service user, who was admitted to the Virtual Ward in University Hospital Limerick earlier this year. Martin talks about how the ward works in practice and the difference it made in his recovery.
Virtual wards are part of the national Virtual Care programme, funded through the government’s #DigitalForCare2030 plan.

Transforming Children’s Healthcare in Ireland with the EHR
In this webinar, Prof Neil O’Hare and some of the CHI Digital Health Team will outline the journey towards a digital hospital and an EHR for children’s healthcare in Ireland, a significant pathfinder initiative for electronic health records in Ireland.

Professor Neil O’Hare
Neil is currently Prof of Health Informatics (University College Dublin) and Group Chief Information Officer for Children’s Health Ireland. He has had a strong emphasis on health informatics throughout his career including heading up many large implementation projects around clinical information systems. He led the one of the first EHR projects in Ireland, implementing into St. James’s in 2006 and initially led the major expansion of this in 2018. He currently heads up the Digital Programme for the New Children’s Hospital, including the full implementation of a Paediatric Electronic Health Record system. Neil is a member of the HSE’s EHR Steering Group and sits on the Irish Government’s Open Data Governance Board.

Siobhain Duggan is vice Chair of HISI and CEO of GS1 Ireland.
Siobhain Duggan is Chief Executive Officer of GS1 Ireland, appointed in July 2025. She has over twenty years’ experience in digital transformation across multiple industries, including roles with Hewlett Packard, Compaq Computer and BMW. Since joining GS1 Ireland in 2010, she has led national programmes supporting the adoption of global standards. Her work has delivered trusted outcomes that enhance safety, efficiency, and transparency across supply chains right to the patient. She leads a dedicated team focused on supporting members across all sectors to navigate digital transformation and realise greater impact and value through global standards. Siobhain is currently Vice-Chair of the Health Informatics Society of Ireland (HISI). She represents HISI on the HSE Digital for Care Advisory Group and is a member of the GS1 Healthcare Leadership Team (Global).
