He joined the Irish Computer Society (ICS) in 2014 as a Data Protection Consultant, where, in addition to his role as a trainer, he provided data protection consultancy services to ICS clients both in the public and private sectors. Today, Lanre runs his own compliance consultancy, assisting organisations across sectors in Ireland and abroad with their data protection compliance obligations. His knowledge and commitment to the field make him a valuable asset in the ever-evolving compliance landscape.

AI for Care —The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy for Healthcare in Ireland 2025-2030
Tom Laffan, Chief Data and Analytics Officer in the HSE, will present “AI for Care —The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy for Healthcare in Ireland 2025-2030”. This strategy has been jointly commissioned by the Department of Health and the HSE. It sets out how AI will support delivery of safe patient care and operational effectiveness in Ireland.

Tom Laffan is the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO) in the HSE. This new role in the HSE is a key part of the health reform programme and the government Digital for Care Ireland 2024 – 2030 framework recognising the increased focus on the use of data across health and social care services.
Tom has many years of health ICT leadership experience and has a long history of working with data, technology and services to deliver improvements in patient care and services. After qualifying with a degree in Applied Computing from Waterford Institute of Technology he started his ICT career in the UK working for a US based software company. From there he gained his first real experience of working in the ICT industry and had the opportunity to engage with many different customers across a range of industries.

ADPO Webinar: Lessons Learned from GDPR
In August 2024, the EU AI Act entered into force across all 27 EU Member States, giving businesses 2 years to prepare for the enforcement of most of its provisions in 2026. As the first legal worldwide framework regulating the use of AI, businesses will be faced with both opportunities and challenges they must consider.
Back in 2018, the GDPR aimed to unify laws across the EU, whilst the AI Act looks to address the explosion in AI and regulate the development and use of this innovative technology in Europe. Businesses are looking to risk and privacy professionals to address this new regulation, much like with GDPR, and these pros can leverage their prior experiences in regulatory preparation and implementation.
The GDPR provided businesses two years to implement this unifying European and globally impacting regulation within their privacy management programs. Now the two-year countdown for the AI act on is on, businesses will be similarly expected to apply these provisions to their own AI programs through AI impact assessments, measuring risk and understanding how third parties are using AI.

ADPO Webinar: Unpacking the EDPB’s 2024 Report
on the Role of the DPO
In 2023, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) selected ‘the Designation and Position of Data Protection Officers’ for its Coordinated Enforcement Action initiative. The report, published in January 2024, is based on the findings of an extensive EU-wide survey that was responded to by data controllers across all EU Member States. In particular, the report sought to understand the challenges faced by DPOs across Europe, including, insufficient resources allocated to DPOs, insufficient expert knowledge and training of DPOs and risks of conflicts of interests. He worked as a Marie-Curie Research Fellow with CONFIRM SFI Research centre for Smart Manufacturing during 2020-2022. His research interests include privacy-preserving data-sharing mechanisms, applied machine learning, and the Internet of Things. He is also an Associate Investigator within the nationally funded CONNECT Centre, Ireland.

Webinar: A Strategy and Roadmap for Digital Health in Ireland
The Department of Health is finalising a Digital Health & Social Care Strategic Framework. This will set the direction for and approach to digital enablement of the health system in Ireland over the next seven years. Amongst other things, this will inform government of the value that investment in digital health can bring. Web Accessibility: Creating Accessible Videos
in Irish Sign Language
The National Disability Authority (NDA) and the Irish Computer Society (ICS) have partnered to deliver a series of training webinars in the area of web accessibility. The series provides practical guidance on achieving compliance with the EU Web Accessibility Directive as well as wider Universal Design considerations.
The Irish Sign Language Act was signed into law on 24th December 2017 and commenced on 23rd December 2020. The Act recognises the right of the Deaf community to access public services using ISL as their native language, including better access to public services through sign language.
