Mobile Internet and Wi-Fi connections have made it possible to access online services and web pages on many different devices. The natural evolution of this will be increased connectivity between objects of our everyday lives and their ability to react to events.
For instance, your car could send information about the status of its subsystems to your local garage and schedule an appointment if necessary. The European Commission recently launched a consultation to gather opinions on this new range of networked devices which is also more commonly known as the ‘Internet of Things’. The consultation focuses on issues such as privacy, security, data protection, ethics matters as well as interoperability and governance.
The consultation is open until 10 July 2012.
