Multi-core & Parallel Computing

Lero-industry-event

The history of computing has been one of extraordinary advances in computing capacity, with sequential processors becoming
18%-50% faster each year for long periods.

However, due to technological limits, processor designers switched from building ever-faster sequential processors to multi-core processors.
This is a fundamental change in the computer industry with huge practical implications.

Whereas previously existing software became faster with each new generation of hardware, now software must be modified or rewritten if it is to benefit from new machines with multiple processor cores.

This talk will discuss some of the challenges that have emerged with building software for multi-core systems, potential implications for computing, and some possible solutions that are emerging in the research community.

The talk will also present some of the ongoing research in Lero@TCD on software for multi-core and parallel computing.

IHCI Conference 2010
2010 will mark the fourth year of the of the Irish Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Conference, which will take place at Dublin City University on September 2nd & 3rd 2010. iHCI 2010 will follow on from the great success of the past three conference events, 2009 at Trinity College Dublin, 2008 at the University College Cork and 2007 in the University of Limerick.

The Irish HCI community has continued to grow over the past number of years and has seen much support through the past iHCI conferences, the establishments of the ACM SIGCHI chapter and regular meetings of the Dublin, and more recently, the Limerick Interaction Design Association (IxDA). This coupled with the diversity in the topics and areas that researchers, students and practitioners in Ireland are operating in, makes it a very exciting time for the community.

To reflect both the growth of the Irish HCI community, and the broad range of research being conducted within Ireland, the theme of this year's conference will be 'Crossing Boundaries'. We welcome submissions exploring, discussing or challenging the many boundaries within our community today: the traditional boundaries between academia and industry; the physical boundaries which influence our work; the boundaries between creativity and code; the boundaries between research and real-world use; and the boundaries between 'traditional' desktop systems and mobile, tangible, or ambient interaction; and pushing boundaries into novel or challenging spaces. More information can be found in the conference's Call for Papers, available in the authors section.

The two-day program will build from the very successful format of 2009 and seeks to provide a national forum through which HCI researchers, practitioners and industry professionals in Ireland can meet, present and discuss their ongoing work. The iHCI 2010 Programme will follow a similar format to the previous conferences and will include an Industry Session (Co-Ordinated by the IxDA Dublin and Limerick Groups), a Student Forum, and a Poster and Demos Showcase along with peer-reviewed short and full paper presentations. We are also delighted to welcome Professor Richard Harper (Microsoft Research) to deliver the opening keynote address.

iHCI 2010 has received many excellent submissions this year and the full program for the 2-day event will be shortly announced. Unfortunately, we could only accept a limited number of full and short paper submissions. However, we wish this year’s conference to be as inclusive as possible. Therefore, we are extending an invitation to many of authors of unsuccessful full and short paper submissions to showcase their work during the Poster Session. We hope this will allow as many as possible an opportunity to present their work and to contribute to the exciting discussion at iHCI 2010.

iHCI 2010 will be held in the School of Nursing / Health Sciences Building in Dublin City University on September 2nd & 3rd 2010. It is kindly supported by both Dublin City University and CLARITY: Centre for Sensor Web Technologies. iHCI 2010 is a local chapter activity of SIGCHI Ireland.

CIO Masterclass Morning: Professor Joe Peppard and Prof. Martin Curley

In November we have something truly special for all current or aspiring CIO’s.

A successful CIO is constantly looking at prioritising best practices to determine how technology can improve an overall performance. If you are working in IT management, or have aspirations for the post of CIO, then these events will help you do just that.

CIO Masterclass Morning: Professor Joe Peppard and Prof. Martin Curley, Thursday 4th November from 8:30-12:00 noon.
Professor Joe Peppard is no stranger to ICS members. Professor Peppard's consulting is focused on advising organisations on IT and strategy related matters and how to unlock business value from their IT investments. He also works with a number of technology companies helping them with their strategy, market positioning and growth.

Prof. Joe Peppard Presents: The Leadership Challenges of the CIO

Research at Cranfield School of Management over 20 years ago led to the development of the IT investment portfolio model. Since then this model and its application has been further developed and enhanced and it is now used by organizations worldwide. Colloquially referred to as the Cranfield Grid, it analyses all existing, planned and potential IT investments based on an assessment of the current and future business importance.

The main purpose in classifying investments is to ensure that they are managed successfully and that the expected contribution is delivered. Based on the issues relevant to each investment type, appropriate implementation strategies can be adopted. These, in turn, can be related to the strategy formulation and planning approaches to provide consistency of management from strategy formulation to implementation.

A powerful framework, its usefulness is borne out by the ease with which business management is willing and able to categorize IT investments and understand current and future investments and their business impact. This Masterclass will introduce the Cranfield Grid and describe how it can be used. As the portfolio will evolve over time how the effects of that evolution can be managed successfully will also be considered.

Prof. Martin Curley is Professor of Technology and Business Innovation at NUI Maynooth and co-Director of IVI, helping lead a unique industry-academic open innovation consortium to advance IT management and innovation.
Prof Curley is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and the Irish Computer Society .He is a frequent international keynote speaker on Innovation and Technology.

Martin also the recently appointed Director of Intel Labs Europe whose mission is to advance Intel research and innovation in Europe while partnering to enable European competitiveness.

Prof Curley is also Senior Principal Engineer and Global Director of IT Innovation at Intel Corporation managing a network of IT Innovation centres catalyzing worldwide IT Innovation.

Prof. Marin Curley Presents: From Zero to Hero: Systematically improving IT capability and value using the IT Capability Maturity Framework.

Data Storage & Analysis Survey by Origina

IT company, Origina recently did an analysis of their data and discovered that 80% of the data sitting in their infrastructure had not been touched in 2 years.

Global industry statistics show that up to 80% of companies’ data has probably not been accessed within the last 30 days, yet we keep it on costly storage environments.

As an ICS member, Origina values your opinion and would appreciate your feedback.  Are these findings common place across the Irish Market?.

This Data Storage & Analysis Survey will take just minutes of your time and those who respond will be entered into a draw to win a 32GB Apple iPad or one of five free data storage analysis assessments.
